When are building permits required?
Building permits are required whenever a building or structure is constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved or demolished. There are some minor projects that are exempt, and no permits are required. Call (707) 648-4374 before you start any work to see if your project requires a permit. Checking with staff first can save you time and money.

How do I get a building permit?
You can get the information needed to submit a permit application one of four ways: visit in person; call (707) 648-4374; print building permit application at this site and fax in to(707)552-0163 for immediate issuance; or file an on-line application for certain types of work. Call the Building Division to see if your permit can be issued on-line or by fax.

How do I schedule an inspection?
Call (707) 648-4384, 24 hours in advance of when you need an inspection and staff will schedule an inspection date. You may call the office (648-4374) on the morning of the inspection date between 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. to find out if it is a morning or afternoon appointment.

Which building code does the city use?
The City has adopted the 2001 California Code Series, which include the following codes: California Building; Abatement of Dangerous Buildings; California Plumbing; California Mechanical and California Fire. The City has also adopted the 2004 California Electrical, 2005 California Energy, and Historical Building code, with a program for the unreinforced masonry buildings.
