Abandoned shopping carts are a problem in Vallejo. Along with being an eyesore, when shopping carts are taken away from stores and used for other purposes, they must be replaced – and that cost is passed on to the consumer. They are left at bus stops, apartment complexes, and used for purposes other than transporting purchases to a cash register and then an automobile in a parking lot. Sometimes they end up a few blocks from the store – sometimes miles.
In the City of Vallejo, store managers want to know where their abandoned carts are so they can be picked up and put back to use. Most, but not all shopping carts display the name of their owner - a grocery store, drug store, or department store - so the solution is fairly simple. If anyone sees and identifies an abandoned shopping cart, a call to the store whose name is on the cart should solve the problem. The stores should have their carts picked up within 24 hours.
